Generally, Point of Sale refers to the location in a store where the transaction--money for goods--takes place. A Point of Sale system is the computerized system which makes a transaction possible. Quite simply, it is the electronic version of a cash register.

Point of Sale (POS) systems are interfaces with which the cashier interacts to do a number of tasks. The typical task is finding the price of an item that a customer wants to purchase, calculating total cost, logging the transaction and providing a receipt. These systems are great for business because they allow for less user error, especially when it comes to calculating change or total cost. POS systems can also check prices while applying current promotions and deals to certain products.

Point of Sale systems are most typically found in retail stores. They have a means of scanning items for price and taking debit card or credit card transactions, including a place for the customer to enter a signature or pin number. The most contemporary version is a touch screen which is easier to use and can generally perform any function necessary for the store from normal transactions to returns, lay-aways, gift card activations and customer loyalty programs. This saves space and time for the retailer and makes the job and the transaction process much easier for both the retailer and customer.

Point of Sale systems have greatly simplified the business of retail stores. They make transactions quickly and more efficiently allowing completion of a number of tasks in a single location. These systems are great for business and, ultimately, for customer satisfaction.
